Depression

Depression is different from regular mood changes and feelings about every day.

It is a common disorder.


It involves loss of pleasure/interest in activities for long periods of time or Is a complex mood disorder also known as depressive disorder. 


Let's see what causes this:

  • Medical conditions especially chronic.

  • Major life changes like divorce, loss.

  • Negative thought patterns.

  • Social media usage.

  • Low self esteem.

  • Stress like work relationship and family.

  • Sleep disorder.

  • Loneliness (social isolation).

  • Alcohol and drugs.


Signs and symptoms of depression

Physical;

  • Disrupted sleep/ sleep disturbance.

  • Changes in appetite and weight changes.

  • Constant Headaches.

  • Feeling very tired or low energy.


Behavioral;

  • Difficulty in concentration.

  • Social withdrawal.

  • Neglecting responsibilities.

  • Substance abuse (drugs, alcohol).

  • Loss of motivation.


Cognitive;

  • Suicidal/death thoughts.

  • Hopelessness about the future.

  • Feelings of excessive guilt/low self-worth.

  • Lack of focus.

  • Negative thought patterns.

  • Memory problems.


Other signs;

Physical slowing.

  • Restlessness.

  • Loss of interest in activities.

  • Increased crying.


Every individual under goes depression but in different ways.

It's great if you identify the above and help the individual move out of depression.


How to overcome depression;

Self-care;

  1. Exercise regularly.

  2. Healthy eating habits.

  3. Quality sleep (7-8hrs).

  4. Engage in hobbies and activities.

  5. Relaxation techniques (meditation, yoga).


Professional help.

  1. Consult a therapist (cognitive behavior therapy).

  2. Physcharitric evaluation (medication if necessary).

  3. Regular checkups.

  4. Contact a medical professional urgently if you are feeling suicidal or wishing you were dead.


Support.

  1. Connect with friends.

  2. Join a support group.

  3. Online communities (WhatsApp forums).


Mindset shifts;

  1. Challenge negative thoughts.

  2. Practice self-compassion.

  3. Focus on present moments.

  4. Set achievable goals.

  5. Celebrate small victories.


Remember overcoming depression takes time and patience.

Remember to avoid causes of depression too.

Also remember to keep a healthy mind and have a good nutritional state.

Seek support when there is need.
