CHILDREN’S EYE CARE: PROTECTING YOUR CHILD’S VISION EARLY

Healthy vision plays a vital role in a child’s growth, learning, and daily activities. From reading books to recognizing faces and playing with friends, children depend heavily on good eyesight.

However, many eye problems in children develop silently and may not be noticed immediately.

Children often assume that the way they see the world is normal, because of this, parents and caregivers must pay close attention to early warning signs of vision problems in children.

Early detection and proper children’s eye care can prevent long-term vision damage and support healthy development.

Why Eye Care in Children Is Important

Good vision is essential for academic success and social development. Experts estimate that over 70–80% of what children learn in school is processed through vision.

When a child has difficulty seeing clearly, it may lead to: Poor school performance, difficulty reading and writing, lack of concentration, reduced confidence in class etc.

Common Causes of Eye Problems in Children

Understanding the causes of eye problems in children can help you to take early action.

  1. Refractive Errors

These occur when the eye cannot focus light properly, they include:

  • Myopia (shortsightedness) i.e. difficulty seeing distant objects.

  • Hyperopia (longsightedness) i.e. difficulty focusing on close objects.

  • Astigmatism i.e. blurred or distorted vision.

These are among the most common vision problems in children and are usually corrected with prescription glasses.

  1. Eye Infections

Children are more likely to develop infections due to touching their eyes with unclean hands.

Common infections include: Conjunctivitis (pink eye), Bacterial eye infections, viral eye infections, Allergic eye reactions.

Symptoms may include redness, swelling, discharge, itching, and irritation.

  1. Strabismus (Crossed Eyes)

This condition occurs when the eyes are not aligned properly and look in different directions. If untreated, it may lead to amblyopia (lazy eye).

  1. Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Amblyopia develops when one eye becomes weaker because the brain relies more on the stronger eye. Early treatment is critical for restoring proper vision.

  1. Eye Injuries

Children can easily sustain eye injuries during play, sports, or accidents, especially when exposed to dust, sharp objects, or chemicals.

  1. Digital Eye Strain

The growing use of smartphones, tablets, computers, and television can lead to digital eye strain in children, causing headaches, blurred vision, and tired eyes.

Warning Signs of Eye Problems in Children

Parents should watch for signs that may indicate vision problems in children, including:

Squinting when looking at objects, Sitting too close to the television, Frequent eye rubbing, Complaints of headaches, Difficulty reading or focusing in school, Holding books very close to the face, Sensitivity to light, Eyes that appear crossed or misaligned and Red or watery eyes.

If any of these signs appear, it is important to schedule an eye examination for your child.

Risk Factors for Childhood Eye Problems

Some children may have a higher risk of developing eye disorders in childhood due to:

  • Exposure to dust, smoke, or allergens.
